STEPHENVILLE (April 7, 2015) — After three seasons of starring at the top of the batting lineup and as a career utility man in the field, Stephenville senior Ben Martin has made his college choice.
Martin, also a football and track standout for the Yellow Jackets, is taking his skill on the diamond – or behind it in the outfield – to Navarro College, a popular destination for Stephenville baseball players through the years.
Following in the likes of current Major Leaguer Brock Holt, brothers Leigh, Garrett and J.T. Autrey, Brian Picha and others from Stephenville, Martin announced his decision to play for Navarro College, a junior college located in Corsicana, on Twitter Sunday evening. He immediately received an outpouring of retweets, favorites and replies supporting his decision and offering encouragement.
“They have a lot of tradition of success, I think that was the biggest thing for me,” said Martin, who visited Division I schools and even received a nomination to the Air Force Academy from U.S. Congressman Roger Williams. “(Playing Division I baseball) is the goal, but I wouldn’t consider it a failure if that didn’t happen. I’m just glad I’m getting to play college baseball.”
Martin and the Yellow Jackets have reached the regional final and regional quarterfinals the last two seasons, and are currently 1-1 in District 6-4A. They host Graham at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Martin has also contributed for semifinalist and quarterfinalist football teams and reached the area meet in track and field.
“We have discipline in Stephenville and that’s important to be good in anything,” Martin said. “There’s the expectation of success you learn to meet and that prepares you for the next level.”
