(April 13, 2015) — Marty Yates is on a roll. So is Bobby Mote.
The Erath County cowboys scored big wins in the Clark County Fair and Rodeo Champions Challenge Sunday – Yates won the tie-down roping while Mote was part of a three-way tie for first in bareback riding.
Yates, who entered the week fourth in his event in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings, roped and tied his calf in 7.6 seconds to earn top money totaling $5,440.
Mote, a four-time world champion who is third in the most recently updated bareback standings, scored 85 points on Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Sourdough. Splitting the top three payouts meant $4,213 for the Huckabay cowboy.
Local team ropers took three of the top five spots in the Champions Challenge. Heeler Travis Woodard placed second along with Derrick Begay, roping head and heels in 5.1 seconds for $4,160. Dustin Birtd and Paul Eaves were fourth in 5.5 seconds for $2,080, while Charly Crawford and Shay Carroll were fifth in 5.7 for $1,280.
Carlee Pierce has recently moved to Oklahoma but still boasts many Erath County ties. She was fourth in the barrel race, completing the course in 17.14 seconds for $2,080.
