STEPHENVILLE (April 21, 2015) — Success in UIL academics is a tradition at SHS and this year is no exception. SHS students compete in 20 different categories, from mathematics and computer science to news writing and persuasive speaking. On Wednesday, April 8, 40 students placed at the district meet in Abilene and twenty-nine will advance to compete at the regional level either as part of a team or individually.

“The best part of UIL is when you do really well and advance from district,” junior, Santi Gallego, said. “Regionals and state are really fun.”

UIL has a legacy of success that is passed down from student to student. Most compete throughout their high school careers.

“I just enjoy being able to hang out with everybody,” junior, Amber Holland, said.

Competitors begin practicing in the fall and take part in several practice meets before district level. Everyone mentally prepares themselves in a different way for the rigorous events.

“I go to sleep early and don’t think about it until it’s time to go,” senior, Jose Vanegas, said. “I don’t want to get nervous or doubt myself. I just want to do my best.”

Since there are so many different categories, many of the students participate in multiple events. Freshman Rebecca Tuggle is in Feature Writing and Headline Writing; she placed third in both.

“I like getting to experience the different aspects of journalism through the competitions,” freshman, Rebecca Tuggle, said.

“If there is anything we should do, it should be UIL,” Superintendent Matt Underwood said. “This is the core of what we do. It has so many skills that kids are going to need outside of high school.”
