STEPHENVILLE (May, 27, 2015) — Tarleton State University has announced the appointment of Dr. Laura Boren, currently vice president for student affairs at Northeastern State University, as Vice President for Student Life, effective July 20, 2015.
The appointment was approved by The Texas A&M System Board of Regents today.
“We are delighted to have such an experienced and professional leader in student development join the Tarleton leadership team,” said President F. Dominic Dottavio. “Dr. Boren’s leadership and involvement in strategic enrollment management and student success, and her commitment to student-focused service standards complement our ongoing initiatives and values at Tarleton.”
Boren will lead the Tarleton Division of Student Life, which includes Student Engagement, Residential Living and Learning, Transition and Family Relations, The Thompson Student Center, Student Leadership Programs, Health Services, Student Counseling Center, Student Publications, Recreational Sports, Rodeo, University Police and Parking, and Judicial Affairs, among other student service areas. She will sit on the President’s Executive Cabinet.
Boren succeeds Darla Doty, interim Vice President for Student Life, who is retiring.
At Northeastern, Boren sits on the President’s Executive Cabinet and guides a Student Affairs division with 150 employees and a nearly $20 million budget. She oversees admissions and recruitment, career services, student recreation, student government, student activities, student affairs, student disability and counseling services, student financial services, student health services, judicial services, university advising, student center and university housing.
In addition to her executive leadership role, Boren’s experiences include compliance administration and accreditation, membership on state boards and task forces, strategic planning and budgeting, student recruitment and persistence, emergency and crisis response, and health and wellness. She leads institution priorities focused on recruiting students, student persistence toward graduate, health and wellness and civic engagement.
“My 18 years in higher education have been a journey that started as a desire to work with students at my alma mater and turned into a passion for leading an institution in providing access and opportunity for students to succeed,’ said Boren. “Tarleton provides a progressive, invigorating, student-centered environment – an ideal place for me to apply my knowledge, skills and abilities.”
Boren became Dean of Student Affairs at Northeastern in 2006 and was promoted to vice president in 2011. Northeastern is a regional comprehensive university with about 11,000 students on three campuses in Oklahoma.

Prior to that, she spent five years at Texas A&M in College Station, beginning as a student development specialist, advancing to program coordinator for extended orientation, leadership and administrative services, and finally becoming assistant to the executive vice president and dean of student life.
From 1997 to 2001, Boren served as director of student activities and special events at Northeastern.
“My strengths are in building relationships, establishing shared vision and values, and creating initiatives that focus on quality improvement,” Boren said. Among her contributions at Northeastern were leading the creation and implementation of a strategic enrollment plan and transforming the Division of Student Affairs to increase student retention and engagement.
Boren obtained funding to expand student counseling and health services, including grants to prevent violence against women and to promote HIV awareness. She created a center for student volunteerism and community engagement, leading to national recognition of Northeastern’s efforts.
Boren earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M. She obtained her master’s degree in College Student Personal Services and her bachelor’s degree in Meetings and Destination Management from Northeastern.
