Kirby was born in Fort Worth, Texas on November 15, 1930 to Robert Oliver Fears and Ruth Elizabeth McCool. He married Sudie (Sue) Bell Tennyson on December 9, 1977, in Cisco, Texas.

From the very beginning, he sang in a little rhythm band in school and in choir at his Sunday school. He found joy in singing at the various churches he attended throughout his life. He cherished his time singing for the Alvarado High School choir, where he met Jean Robinson. They had so much fun singing together during those 2 years. After Jean preceded him in death, he married Sue, who also sang in a choir, and they continued singing together ever since. He was saved at Buel Baptist Church in 1947 under the direction of Brother Ed Hamilton, on a beautiful summer day. He was baptized at East Henderson Baptist Church in Cleburne. He was a deacon since November 16, 1958. He was ordained at his home church, Golden Gate Baptist Church, in Fort Worth with Brother Luther Mann as pastor. Kirby and Sue joined the Gideonýs International together in 1984. Kirby served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 as a Corporal, during the Korean War.
