STEPHENVILLE (June 24, 2015) — Former Stephenville High School multi-sport standout Malik Taylor is turning in his Tarleton State football pads for a Ranger College basketball uniform.

Stephenville High School head coach Bill Brooks confirmed by text message Wednesday that Taylor, a district MVP and all-region selection on the hardwood at SHS, was transferring. Brooks was assistant coach at that time and was named head coach last month.

Taylor, a 5-10 point guard, helped Stephenville to a pair of historic seasons in basketball as the Yellow Jackets reached the regional quarterfinals then made their first-ever regional finals appearance when he was a junior and senior in 2013 and 2014. He also played football as a senior, helping Stephenville to the 2013 4A Division I semifinals as a cornerback.

Taylor walked on and redshirted as a football player at Tarleton last fall.

Ranger College recently made national headlines by naming Billy Clyde Gillispie its new men’s basketball coach. Gillispie, a Ranger College alumnus who played for the Rangers in the 1970s, has served as head coach at UTEP, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Texas Tech. He has been out of coaching since 2012.
