Stephenville ropers Key, Lucero, Long each earn big PRCA wins

(July 13, 2015) — Three area team ropers won more than $7,000 each at the Central Wyoming Fair & Rodeo and the Sheridan Rodeo, two of the biggest events on the PRCA circuit last week.

The all-Stephenville pairing of David Key and Martin Lucero continues its steady climb up the Windham Weaponry 2015 PRCA World Standings thanks to a win at the Central Wyoming Fair & Rodeo in Casper. They roped three head in 18.8 seconds to take the average and $4,106 after tying for fifth and $1,131 in the first go round and placing third for another $836 in the finals. The duo pushed their weekly earnings north of $7,000 with $853 for placing sixth in Sheridan, Wyo.

Lucero is 18th in the world heeling standings while Key is 21st in heading. Lucero is trying to reach the National Finals Rodeo for the 17th time including the seventh in the last eight years after missing in 2014. Key has been the the NFR nine times, but has not qualified since 2009. The win in Casper is their second after the ABC Rodeo in Lubbock.

Sheridan is where heeler Jake Long of Stephenville partnered with Coleman Proctor to earn the bulk of their whopping $11,020 week. They roped two head in 9.5 seconds to claim the average and $3,678 each after winning the second go for $2,452 and placing second in the first round for another $2,132. They also tied for fourth at the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo., pocketing another $2,758 and lifting Long to seventh in the world standings. He is looking to reach the NFR for the fifth time in his career, all in successive years.

Lots of area team ropers were in the money at various events last week, including Lipan heeler Patrick Smith winning the Rooftop Rodeo and $4,367 in 4.5 seconds. Tying Long for second were Luke Brown of Stephenville and Kollin VonAhn of Huckabay, earning $2,758 each in 4.8 seconds.

Serling Crawley continued his recent wave of success with his fifth victory of the year, his second outside Texas. He won the average and the first round at Casper, where he was also second in the finals. He scored 169 on two head to take $1,830 in the average, and also earned $1,830 for his winning first-round score of 87 on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s “Sabre.” Crawley pocketed $1,250 for placing second with 82 points in the second round, earning a total of $4,910 at the event.

Sterling Smith earned a cop-championship in the Ute Stampede tie-down roping, claiming $1,900 in 7.5 seconds, and Tarleton State University and Stephenville barrel racer Shelby Herrmann won first place and $3,403 in 17.56 seconds at Rooftop Rodeo.
