(August 18, 2015) — Tarleton State received 37 votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II preseason poll, not enough to make the top 25.

The poll, released Tuesday, includes just one Lone Star Conference member – No. 22 West Texas A&M – in the top 25. Angelo State received 46 spots and joins Tarleton on the outside looking in. ASU was 29th and Tarleton 31st in the voting.

Tarleton upset ASU 3-2 in the 2014 LSC Championship semifinals and West Texas A&M 3-2 in the final for its first conference tournament title in school history. The TexAnns added to their historic season a week later when they swept Metropolitan State College (Colo.), 3-0, in a South Central Region semifinal, the first Division II playoff win in school history.

Tarleton was eliminated by Arkansas-Fort Smith, 3-1, in the regional semifinals, and UAFS is now No. 21 in the preseason poll.

The TexAnns return Daktronics third-team All-America and first-team All-Region selection Hailey Roberts, a sophomore who was LSC Freshman of the Year and is the 2015 LSC Preseaosn Offesnive Player of the Year. Also back is LSC Defensive Player of the Year Kenya Alexander, a 6-4 senior middle blocker who joined Roberts on the all-region team and is projected by coaches, sports information personnel and designated media to repeat her conference defensive honor.

Tarleton began preseason practices Monday and opens its season September 4-5 in the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational at Angelo State. They have four regional matches in the event – Texas Permian Basin and Chadron State (Neb.) on September 4, followed by Western New Mexico and Newman (Okla.) on September 5.

Tarleton has its home opener at 7 p.m. on September 8 against Division III Howard Payne.
