STEPHENVILLE (August 25, 2015) — If it were a game of cards, Stephenville would have been accused of rigging the deck.

The Honeybees finally brought their A-Game home to Gandy Gym Tuesday evening, and that meant aces. Lots of them. Sixteen to be exact in a 25-15, 25-8, 25-18 win over 5A White settlement Brewer.

It was the 18th match of the season against 5A or 6A competition for Stephenville (10-10) and its first victorious sweep in a regulation best-of-five match.

Kaleigh Conger and Mikayla Hobbs each aced five serves and Kerstin Fredrickson added four to fuel the easy win. The offense was balanced up front with Hobbs landing eight kills, Conger and Kourtney Seaton six each and Fredrickson five. Seaton also had four blocks, Chelsea Gillespie contributed 16 assists and Kylee Ponder tallied 14 digs.

A stretch of eight straight points – seven with Seaton serving – gave Stephenville a 12-8 advantage in the opening set, and the lead grew from there. Hobbs made it six aces by Stephenville on back-to-back serves to make it 23-12.

Much like the first set when they trailed 8-4 before the big run, the Honeybees started off behind in game two. Brewer led 4-2 before a sideout began a five point run. It was 8-6 until a sideout then five aces during a stretch of 12 straight serves by Conger.

The run made it 21-6 before a couple lift penalties against the Honeybees. Fredrickson got the club back on track by again finding a soft spot in the defense to fire home an ace, and a couple Brewer errors ended the set.

The third game followed much the same script as the first two. Brewer scored the opening four points – the third on an impressive line drive ace of its own – before Stephenville gathered itself.

Stephenville head coach Fran Metzger on the Tuesday night sweep of Brewer:

A service error gave the ball to Hobbs, and the comeback was under way. She aced a serve, Seaton had a block and Conger nailed a kill to make it 4-4. Points were traded until Fredrickson aced consecutive serves for a 13-10 Stephenville lead, after which Brewer never had a chance.

A loud Seaton kill shot followed by a Hobbs ace and a cross for a kill by Conger made it 20-14 and a desperate Brewer club called timeout with Stephenville already on cruise control.

The Honeybees have another tough tournament slate ahead this weekend at the Leander ISD Volleypalooza. Pool matches begin Thursday with Stephenville taking on Alvin at 11 a.m., Lake Dallas at 2 p.m. and Liberty Hill at 3 p.m.
