STEPHENVILLE (September 3, 2015) — Tarleton State University officially has $24.2 million budgeted for the renovation and expansion of Memorial Stadium, home of the Texans and the Stephenville High School football teams.

“This is exciting for our athletics department, our university and this entire community,” said Tarleton athletic director Lonn Reisman Thursday evening. “I’m even excited for what it means to other communities in our area. Dublin and Hico have played at our stadium, Hamilton has played there. We’ve hosted many playoff games through the years, and when our renovation and expansion is complete, we will have a much upgraded, first-class facility that can be enjoyed by this entire region of the state.”

Reisman did not get into specific details, saying those would have to wait until a press conference next Thursday at the Tarleton Welcome Center.

“A lot of the details will be explained and a lot of questions answered at that time,” he said. “All I know is this is a very exciting day for Tarleton because we can make our football stadium a shining beacon for this university.”

Reisman declined to discuss a timeline for construction to begin, but it will likely be at least six months before so much as a shovel strikes the ground.

He did state that renovations will include transforming the west side into the home side of the stadium, new turf and a new track. He also dispelled reports that the track would no longer be located within the stadium.

“The track will be inside the stadium as it has always been,” he said. “We want our track athletes to enjoy the upgraded stadium, too.”

The $24.2 million is part of a $162.7 million capital improvements package for Tarleton that was approved by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents Thursday. The bulk of that money is for educational facilities.

The Flash will have more on the stadium renovation following the university press conference next Thursday as part of a series on the coming capital improvements.
