(September 8, 2015) — It’s no secret there is no region of the world more densely populated with successful team ropers than Erath County and the Cross Timbers.
But just in case rodeo fans in Ellensburg, Washington were unaware, they were given a bold reminder at the Ellensburg Rodeo that ended on Labor Day.
Reigning world champs Clay Tryan of Lipan and Jade Corkill of Huckabay roped three head in 17.7 seconds to win the average. They were second in the first round and second in the finals, winning a total of $6,648 each.
Chad masters and Stephenville heeler Travis Graves will be among the National Finals Rodeo qualifiers trying to unseat the world champs, and they were right on their heels in Ellensburg, placing second in 18.7 seconds. The formidable duo won the second round and was third in the finals for a total of $5,259.
Huckabay header Charly Crawford and Dublin heeler Shay Carroll took fourth in the average in 206 seconds and won $2,267. Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves and partnerClay Smith were eighth in the average with 11.4 on two head. They tied for second with a round-two time of 5.0, and finished the event winning $2,321.
Stephenville heeler Logan Medlin won the first round in 4.6 seconds, pocketing $2,482. Stephenville heeler Kory Koontz tied for seventh and $378 in 5.8 seconds in the same round. Billy Bob Brown, a Stephenville header, tied for fifth in 5.2 seconds in the second round, earning $1,025.
Four-time world champion Bobby Mote of Stephenville finished sixth in the bareback riding average, while isaac Diaz of Desdemona took eighth in saddle bronc riding and Sterling Smith of Stephenville placed fifth in tie-down roping. Martin Poindexter of Stephenville finished second in the steer roping average.
