STEPHENVILLE – After leading Tarleton to a 5-0 start, Hailey Roberts and Meg Umbel were recognized by the Lone Star Conference as the top offensive and defensive players, respectively.

Roberts put together, not just one of the best starts by any LSC player of the past week, but arguably one of the best starts to a season in school history.

The sophomore outside hitter from Cedar Park blasted a league-leading 100 kills in the first five games. In the season opener against Chadron State, Roberts landed a career-high 32 kills – making her the third TexAnn in school history and first since 1999 to land 30 kills in a single game.

In addition to high volume of kills, the sophomore is landing them at an incredible rate, boasting a .402 hitting percentage for the opening week of the season. She has also landed a league-leading amount of service aces (10) while also posting four double-doubles in the first five games. She has recorded 51 digs, which is second highest on the team, and 13 total blocks in addition to a team-best 116.5 points in five games.

Meanwhile, Umbel made a triumphant return to the starting lineup for Tarleton this weekend as the senior from San Antonio lifted Tarleton to a 5-0 start, including three straight sweeps of Texas-Permian Basin, Western New Mexico, and Howard Payne.

Umbel, who missed extended time last year coming back from an injury, not only leads Tarleton in blocks with 24 but also leads the Lone Star Conference, while helping limit opponents to a .090 hitting percentage. The senior also leads with a 1.41 blocks per set average. In addition to her work at the net, she added 20 kills, two assists, two digs, and 32.5 points.

For Roberts, this marks the fourth LSC Offensive Player of the Week award in her short Tarleton career. It is the first award for Umbel.

Roberts, Umbel, and the TexAnns will head to Colorado this weekend for the Steel and Silver Classic at Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado State-Pueblo. Tarleton will begin tournament play with a 9 a.m. match against Missouri Western in Colorado Springs.
