STEPHENVILLE (September 16, 2015) — The Department of Fine Arts and Theatre at Tarleton presents its first play of the 2015-2016 season, Lopsided, by novelist and playwright E. A. Kafkalas, with opening night set Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.
The show, directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Prudence Jones, runs through Saturday, Sept. 26, with a 7:30 p.m. performance each evening. Tickets for the play are $10 for adults; $8 for senior citizens, high school students, and faculty and staff; and $5 for Tarleton students with a valid ID. Tickets are available from 2-6 p.m. weekdays at the Fine Arts Box Office beginning Sept. 14.
During the run of Lopsided, Kafkalas will visit the Tarleton campus and provide a brief talk to the cast, crew and audience following the Wednesday evening performance.
“How long, and how tight, should you hold on to a part of yourself that’s no longer there? It’s the most wrenching question in Lopsided, Kafkalas’ searching play about a woman (Laurie) facing breast cancer and the aftermath.
The plot revolves around four college friends who have reunited in London for the marriage of their friend, Dr. Mary Lewis. Megan, a photographer, discovers her best friend, Laurie, a high school teacher, has been fighting breast cancer for the past seven months. Laurie kept her illness a secret from Megan because Megan lost her lover to inflammatory breast cancer. Despite Laurie’s positive attitude, her self-esteem has been shattered by the mastectomy and her ex-boyfriend’s insensitivity. Complicating Laurie’s weekend is the thought of seeing Gail, who still believes that Laurie stole her boyfriend in college.
Kafkalas is the author of the novels The Second Heart, Soul Mistakes and Frankie & Petra, and the plays Lopsided and Pandora’s Golden Box. A true Renaissance woman, she has worked in the theater as an actor, director and a producer. In addition, Kafkalas is a mixed-media artist, working with clay and acrylics.
Cast and crew for the upcoming production are: Shelbie Monk (Gail), Willie Byrum (Peter), Alicia Sutton (Mary), Emilia Richardson (Megan), Hannah Allemand (Laurie), stage manager Sarah McGrath, assistant stage manager Jacob Glick, costume designer Jennifer Lewis, sound designer Cody Daniell, hair and makeup designer Madison Paradis and assistant lighting designer Jesus Rodriguez. Set design for Lopsided is by Carol Stavish, associate professor of theatre.
