STEPHENVILLE (September 21, 2015) — Tarleton State University welcomes author Matthew Salesses to campus Tuesday, Sept. 29, as part of the Speaker Symposium Series. Salesses will discuss his own personal experiences in a talk entitled “How the Rules of Racism Are Different for Asian Americans.”
Discussions on racism usually center on Black and Latino communities. Rarely do they revolve around how Asians and Asian Americans are impacted by it.
The free event begins at 7:30 p.m. inside Room 117 of the O.A. Grant Humanities Building. The public and campus community are invited to attend. Following the lecture, Salesses will hold a book signing for his latest book, The Hundred-Year Flood.
Salesses was adopted from Korea at age 2. He has written about adoption, race and parenting for National Public Radio’s Code Switch, The New York TimesMotherlode blog, Salon, The Toast, the Center for Asian American Media, Hyphen, The Rumpus, and The Good Men Project. His fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train, American Short Fiction, Witness, West Branch, PEN/Guernica, and many others.

His other books include I’m Not Saying, I’m Just Saying (a novel in flash, Civil Coping Mechanisms), The Last Repatriate (a novella, Nouvella), Different Racisms (essays, Thought Catalog Books), and Our Island of Epidemics (a chapbook, [PANK] Little Books). In November 2015, Gazillion Strong will serialize his illustrated Korean drama/novel, Marked, which can be supported on Patreon.
Salesses has received awards and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Glimmer Train, Mid-American Review, [PANK], HTMLGIANT, IMPAC, Inprint, and elsewhere. He earned his master of fine arts at Emerson College, where he editedRedivider Journal, and he is currently a Cambor Fellow and Ph.D. candidate in creative writing and literature at the University of Houston.
Salesses also serves as insight editor for The Offing, online fiction editor for Gulf Coast, and fiction editor for The Good Men Project. He teaches creative writing for Inprint, Writespace, and Grub Street, both in the classroom and online.
