ERATH COUNTY (September 28, 2015) — Makayla Elliott Hart, the daughter of Stephenville Fire Department Battalion Chief Chuck Elliott, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee that collided with a milk truck before 6 a.m. on US Highway 281 north of Stephenville Monday morning.

According to officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Jeep driven by Hart was traveling north on 281 when the milk truck turned out from County Road 176, also know as Cheese Plant Road, in front of the oncoming vehicle. Unable to stop, the Jeep collided with the back of the truck, pinning Hart in the vehicle.

Emergency personnel from Erath County EMS, Erath County Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Erath County Sheriff’s Office, DPS and Cross Timbers First Responders worked to secure the scene and free Hart, who was conscious when loaded onto the helicopter. An air ambulance took Hart from the scene to a Fort Worth hospital with multiple injuries.

As of noon, those close with the family said Hart was still in critical condition. The driver of the truck was not injured and, reportedly, was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

DPS Troopers are still investigating the accident and no more information could be given at this time.
