(October 5, 2015) — Tarleton State still is not in the top 25, but there are still coaches who believe the TexAnns belong there.
Tarleton picked up five more voting points – going from three to eight – in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll. The TexAnns won their fifth and sixth straight matches Friday evening and Saturday, beating St. Edwards in three sets and Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville in four, both on the road.
Tarleton returns home for an important LSC showdown against Cameron (Okla.) at 6 p.m. Friday and also host Midwestern State at 2 p.m. Saturday, both in Wisdom Volleyball Gym.
Tarleton (14-3, 4-1) and Cameron (13-1, 4-1) are tied alongside Angelo State (15-4, 4-1) a half game behind LSC leader Texas Woman’s (12-3, 5-1). The parity between the top four in the league is impressive with TWU defeating Cameron, Tarleton beating TWU and ASU knocking off Tarleton. The only ASU loss came in a four-set upset at A&M-Kingsville last Friday.
Adding to the parity is Texas A&M-Commerce (11-5, 4-2), which is just one match out of first.
The TexAnns lead the league with a .250 attack percentage, followed by ASU at .229 and TWU at .222. Tarleton also leads with 14.15 assists per set, 14.85 kills, 11.18 kills allowed and 2.46 blocks.
Reigning All-American and LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Hailey Roberts, a sophomore outside hitter, leads the league in kills at 6.08 per set, and aces at 0.53. Senior middles Meg Umbel and Kenya Alexander are first and third in the league in blocks and 1.23 and 1.18. Umbel is running away with the top attack percentage in the conference at .394. Sophomore setter Chandler Gow leads in assists at 11.91 per set.
