STEPHENVILLE (October 10, 2015) — No. 10 Brownwood did something it hadn’t done on the road since 2003, and did it by holding Stephenville to its fewest points in the “Battle of 377” since 1992.

Brownwood took the ball away from Stephenville four times, limited the Yellow Jackets to just 185 total yards offense and outscored them 21-0 after halftime in a 33-6 win over Stephenville at Memorial Stadium Friday night.

It is also the first time Brownwood has defeated Stephenville in a district contest since 2003, as each team opened up its 3-4A Division I schedule Friday.

The game really began flowing in Brownwood’s direction when Gavin Jefferson ran away with a 96-yard touchdown to open up a 19-6 lead in the third. Moments earlier, Stephenville had a chance to take the lead but was stuffed on fourth down to end a drive that began at the Brownwood 24 following a 36-yard punt return by Stephenville’s Jon Clark Giddings.

Stephenville fumbled away its next possession and Brownwood had to drive just 34 yards to reach the end zone on a one-yard plunge by Jefferson, who rushed for 126 yards.

Like a broken record, almost the same sequence played out again, only this time Stephenville moved to Brownwood territory first. The Jackets fumbled the ball away at the Brownwood 38, and with 8:32 remaining Lion quarterback Grant Lewis finished the ensuing drive and completed the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown on a keeper.

Brownwood led 2-0 just seconds into the game. A disastrous opening kickoff left Stephenville starting at its own one yard line, and the Yellow Jackets were called for intentional grounding in their own end zone.

Brownwood returned the safety kick to the Stephenville 39 before using a 27-yard field goal by Aaron Jimenez to lead 5-0. The Jacket defense slowed the bleeding once more moments later, stuffing Brownwood and as the Lions missed a 42-yard field goal following the first Stephenville turnover on a fumble.

Stephenville held a brief lead when Nico Madrid capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard TD run. But Lewis answered for Brownwood, capping an equally impressive 12-play, 73-yard march with a 12-yard TD for a 12-6 lead that stood until halftime.

The offensive woes are piling up now for Stephenville, which has not scored 30 points in a single game this season and has been held to less to 10 or less in four of six contests.

Stephenville doesn’t have long to correct the issues with a westward trip to Snyder for another 3-4A Division I game next Friday. Snyder opened league play with a 49-34 win over Big Spring, its first district victory in the last two seasons.
