STEPHENVILLE (November 10, 2015) — I caught up with Stephenville girls basketball head coach Alan Thorpe today and learned a few things about his team before tonight’s season opener at Burnet.

Let’s share:

  1. Stephenville finally has some size: With Liz Pack returning, Emily Brandon in the mix after volleyball and Katie Pierce also coming along, Stephenville will finally have some size to hang its hat on in the paint.
  2. They sure are quick out there: Bayleigh Chaviers is back, and that means steals aplenty with pressure defense. Chaviers is joined by returning guards Kali Smith and Skyler Chipman to form a formidable, attacking threesome in the backcourt.
  3. Hobbs, Wall should make a difference: Mikayla Hobbs is still playing volleyball currently, but when she returns to the court she brings quickness and swagger that Coach Thorpe like. Payton Wall is a tall guard or a mid-sized forward who brings versatility and can “flat out fly,” Thorpe says. These are great players to package together when wanting to add to the pressure defense on the floor.
  4. No Larner for season, Thorpe out temporarily: Lariat Larner suffered a torn MCL that cut short her junior season. Finally cleared, in less than a week the senior Honeybee tore her meniscus and will miss her senior year. Ali Thorpe suffered a broken thumb, and her father and head coach says she’ll be out “a couple more weeks.”
  5. We know very little about Burnet: Not that scouting is ever of great importance for a season opener, but in this instance Thorpe says his staff and players are going in particularly blind. Calls to coaches who scrimmaged Burnet were not returned.
