GRANBURY (November 23, 2015) — With 7:14 remaining in the game, senior guard Kali Smith took a pass from sophomore teammate Payton Wall and buried a left corner 3-pointer to give the Honeybees a 42-40 lead.

But Granbury answered with an authoritative 16-3 run – the only Stephenville points during the lull came on another Smith three – and led by as many as 11 in the closing moments of a 59-47 victory over the Honeybees.

Erin Jones scored 18 to lead Granbury, hitting two fourth quarter 3-pointers during the big run, including one out of a Stephenville timeout that appeared to take the win out the Honeybees’ sails.

Six foot post Amber Strange controlled the paint with 16 points and a slew of rebounds. Gabbie Nunn added 10 for Granbury.

Skyler Chipman led Stephenville with 12. Kali Smith had all of her 11 in the second half after Bayleigh Chaviers netted all of her 11 before intermission.

Stephenville was cold shooting throughout, but never moreso than in the fourth quarter. Turnovers were also a problem, especially in the second half when the third quarter both began and ended with back-to-back Stephenville giveaways.

Still, the Bees led 39-38 after the third, thanks to 3-pointers by Smith and Chipman in the final 90 seconds of the period. Before that, the Bees had just two field goals and five points over the first 6:30 of the period. They had only five field goals in the second half.

Chaviers and Chipman were forcing turnovers and exchanging baskets off them in the first half, combining for 18 points to give the Bees a 28-24 lead. They began gathering the momentum when they scored the final four of the first for a 10-6 edge.

Other Stephenville scorers were Wall with four, Mikayla Hobbs two, AbbyBrawner two, Liz Pack two, Emily Brandon two and Ali Thorpe one.

Stephenville visits Jim Ned at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sub-varsity play starts at 4 p.m.
