FORT WORTH, Texas—The State Bar of Texas and the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy has approved Tarleton State University’s mediation program for 40 hours of CLE (continuing legal education) credit and three hours of ethics.

The program is ideal for Texas-licensed attorneys and certified public accountants required to earn face-to-face CLE credit as well as anyone interested in the mediation process. The program includes lectures, group discussions and practice mediation sessions. Those who complete the spring 2016 course can get an early start on classes needed to earn graduate certification in alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

The ADR program is new to Tarleton’s growing list of graduate certification opportunities available through its School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies and begins with the 2016 fall semester.

Those who earn ADR graduate certification are qualified to perform court-ordered mediations in Texas and 42 other states. For the convenience of working professionals and busy students, the certification program—three mandatory classes and one elective—can be completed online.

“Our new ADR graduate certification program is perfect for anyone pursuing a profession in dispute resolution, including career changers, retirees, law enforcement personnel and anyone who has conflict in their life, as well as those who want to start a second career or simply want to know more about the dispute resolution process,” said Dr. Gary Lacefield, director of Tarleton’s Institute of Mediation, Arbitration, Legal Studies and Forensics. “The curriculum explores the methods of dispute resolution, offers advanced mediation strategies and increases overall communication skills.”

A follow-up seminar on starting and marketing an ADR practice is available for those who complete the certification program.
