STEPHENVILLE (December 1, 2015) — Tarleton State has taken the next step in the hiring process for a new head football coach.

“We are in the interview process and I hope to have someone hired as soon as possible to keep us from falling behind in recruiting,” said Tarleton athletic director Lonn Reisman Tuesday.

Reisman did not disclose who is being interviewed, but multiple reports are that Tarleton football alumnus and former Texan assistant coach Scott Carey is on campus for an interview today (Tuesday). Many alumni are reportedly voicing their support for Carey, currently the offensive line coach at Abilene Christian, but he isn’t the only candidate that has surfaced.

Reports are that Todd Whitten, a two-time former Tarleton head coach who led the Texans to the national quarterfinals in 2001 and back to the playoffs in 2004, has expressed interest in the position, along with former Tarleton defensive coordinator Darian Dulin. Whitten is currently receivers coach at Texas-El Paso (UTEP), while Dulin is defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian.

A source who has spoken to Josh Lynn says the Eastern New Mexico head coach is also interested. Under Lynn’s guidance, ENMU shared the 2013 Lone Star Conference championship with Tarleton.

Tarleton has not announced how many candidates it plans to interview on campus, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Carey is getting a shot.

Carey played offensive line from 1994-97 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Tarleton. He also holds a master’s degree from Northeastern State (Okla.). After four seasons as offensive line coach at Colorado School of Mines, he returned to Tarleton as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2006-10. He directed an offense that helped Tarleton to a share of the LSC title and an opening round national playoff win in 2009.

Carey returned to Colorado School of Mines in 2011, spending three seasons as offensive coordinator before leaving for ACU in 2014.

Cary Fowler resigned after six seasons as head coach at Tarleton on November 16, after the completion of a 3-7 season. The Texans were 30-32 under Fowler, including a 7-3 mark and share of the LSC title in 2013.

Mason Miller is overseeing day-to-day operations of the program as interim head coach. Reisman did not indicate if Miller is a candidate for the head coach vacancy and has not publicly disclosed the names of any candidates.
