(December 7, 2015) — Sterling Smith and Jacobs Crawley are on fire at the National Finals Rodeo.

Smith, a tie-down roper from Stephenville, placed for the second straight night and the third time in five rounds Monday, earning $11,000 for a fourth-place finish in 8.6 seconds. Smith has pocketed $41,250 at the finals at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, jumping to eighth in the world standings with $123,546.55 in season earnings.

Crawley has even more momentum on his side.

The Stephenville product scored 88.5 points in the saddle bronc Monday, trailing only the 90 point ride of CoBurn Bradshaw. Crawley conquered Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman for $20,730.77 Monday. It was the second best ride of the 2015 finals, but still not enough to win the round because CoBurn Bradshaw had the best ride of 90 aboard Beutler & Sons’ Wound Up.

Crawley has earned $74,461.54 at the finals, pushing his season earnings to $193,323.59. He has a lead of less than $15,000 over Cody DeMoss in the world standings, and after placing fourth or better in each of the first five rounds, also tops the average with 418.5 on five. Only he, Bradshaw and Wade Sundell, have stayed on all five broncs.

Stephenville heeler Jake Long earned the most money of the 18 local athletes Monday. Long and partner Coleman Proctor needed just 4.0 seconds to split the team roping round with Derrick Begay and Clay O’Brien Cooper. Each man earned $23,480.77. Proctor and Long surged into third in the average with 29.60 seconds on five head.

Stephenville header Luke Brown and Huckabay heeler Kollin VonAhn were third in 4.3 seconds Monday, pocketing $15,653.85. Stephenville heeler Kory Koontz helped header Colby Lovell to sixth in 5.10 seconds for $4,230.77.

Team ropers from Erath County and the surrounding area won more than $59,019.24 Monday, leading local athletes to $94,980.78 in the round and $477,930.10 in the finals.

Bobby Mote stayed on 2015 Bareback Horse of the Year Dirty Jacket of Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo for 81.5 points and sixth place Monday, winning $4,230.77. The four-time world champ has made the money twice so far.

It was a disappointing fifth round for Stephenville tie-down roper Marty Yates, who stayed alive in the average but posted a time of 17.80 seconds. That dropped him to fourth in the world and eighth in the average at the midway point of the finals.

The back half of the rodeo gets under way Tuesday. Round six – and all rounds – will be televised by CBS Sports beginning at 9 p.m. (CST).
