STEPHENVILLE (December 10, 2015) — Stephenville Police officials say no one was in any danger when they converged on the Bosque River Center before 6 a.m. Thursday morning. Instead, it was a repeat of a similar crime from last December with similar results.
According to officials with the Stephenville Police Department, officers were dispatched to a motion alarm inside the JC Penney store. Upon arrival, officers reported all the doors to the store were locked and, upon entering the building, observed a hole had been cut in the ceiling to enter the store.
Officers retreated from the store and called for backup as they were unsure if the criminals were still in the building.
Stephenville PD, along with assistance from Stephenville Fire Department, set up a perimeter around the store and waited for Erath County’s joint SWAT team with Hood County to arrive. However, upon making entry into the building, no one was found inside JC Penney. According to Stephenville PD officials, they believe the thieves left through the same hole they entered.
Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said his deputies used the county’s new drone to search the tops of other businesses, but found no evidence of any other break-ins. Stephenville PD officials said after a thorough search of the store and the merchandise, investigators and store officials say nothing was removed, but it was unclear, at this time, how much damage has been done to the store .
This isn’t the first time thieves have entered a business in the Bosque River Center through the ceiling and escaped. Last December, the same JC Penney was broken into the same way and surrounding businesses sustained damage as well. Officials have not commented on the likelihood of those crimes being connected.
Very little was taken in that crime as well, police officials said. However, no arrest was made in the break-in last December and police currently have no information to release on the suspect or suspects in this recent burglary.
