Stephenville can’t overcome big early deficit against La Vega

(January 5, 2015) — A slow first half – especially the second quarter – left Stephenville playing from behind at Gandy Gym Tuesday evening, and the Yellow Jackets never caught up in a 71-57 loss to Waco La Vega.

Stephenville cut a 17 point halftime deficit to 41-35 as its offense finally came to life over the first four minutes of the third quarter. La Vega led 49-41 entering the fourth, then pulled away its highest scoring quarter of the night, pouring in 22 in the fourth.

The Jackets scored 38 points in the second half after trailing 36-19 at intermission. They scored 22 in the third quarter along, when Darian Brown and Easton Jones got on the board with five points each after being blanked in the first half. Zoey Kendall also scored five in the third, when Josh Nowell and Coby Vandenberg each added four.

Nowell the way with 11 for the night, while Vandenberg netted 10. Jones and Kendall each scored eight, Brown seven, Cameron Frazier had all of his five in the fourth and Malachi Taylor contributed three.

Stephenville visits Robinson at 8 p.m. Friday and concludes its pre-district schedule at home against Eastland next Tuesday.
