STEPHENVILLE (January 15, 2016) — Tarleton State University students, faculty and staff joined forces again in a big way to support the annual Erath County United Way campaign.

The Tarleton community, through its annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) and a coordinated effort by students residing on campus, collected $7,454 to support the local United Way affiliate’s 2015 campaign. The 2015 effort nearly doubled the total raised by university faculty and staff, thanks to a Penny Drive spearheaded by Tarleton’s Residential Living & Learning staff and second-year student Residential Leaders.

“As a United Way cabinet member, we are charged with finding new and innovative fundraising approaches to help the campaign reach its goal,” said Dr. Denae Dorris, director of Tarleton’s Center for Academic Outreach and Engagement.  “This year, I was thrilled to explore new fundraising options through Tarleton’s Residential Living & Learning Division.

“I am especially pleased to see the active participation among students in this campaign,” Dorris continued. “I hope we can replicate this success throughout other colleges and divisions in the near future. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all members of the SECC campaign and the RL&L leadership team for their involvement in this campaign.”

Erath County United Way (ECUW) reported a total of $280,056.13 raised for its 2015 campaign, with monies supporting 22 local non-profit agencies serving the county.

“Because of Tarleton’s continued efforts in supporting Erath County United Way through its State Employee Charitable Campaign, we are once again able to help make Erath County a better place to live, and ensure that every individual and every family achieves their full potential through education, financial stability and healthy lives,” said ECUW Executive Director Lisa Scroggins. “We are thankful for the Tarleton community and their contributions towards our 2015 campaign goal. Together, we do make a difference in our communities across the county.”

Each year, many Tarleton employees participate in the SECC, which provides an opportunity for faculty and staff to designate funds to a local charity of their choice. This year’s on-campus campaign, organized by Dr. Anthony Pursell and members of the SECC committee, collected a total of $5,954 for Erath County United Way.

The residential hall Penny Drive, held Nov. 5-24, netted $1,500 in change collected among 15 residence halls and student apartment complexes at Tarleton, according to Residential Coordinator Jamilla Parris. “The Residential Leaders worked very hard with our student residents in raising funds for United Way, which supports many great causes in our community,” she said.
