(January 29, 2016) — Tarleton State head coach Bryan Conger said he was hoping to see more power from his lineup this season.

So far, that’s a check.

The Texans opened their 2016 campaign with five runs in the top of the first inning on the road against a 2015 Division II World Series qualifier. They went on to add two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to blow open what eventually was a 10-5 win over No. 16 Henderson State at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Conger said in the preseason that Jake Hasbrouck was “going to hurt a lot of baseballs,” and the New Mexico State transfer backed him up by going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in the seventh straight season opening win by Tarleton.

Batting behind Hasbrouck in the six-hole, Dalton Richardson had a breakout season opener, going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBI.

Hunter Seales was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, as Tarleton went deep three times in the opener. The three-game series concludes with a  doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.

Stacy Heinatz was 2-for 4 with a pair of doubles for Tarleton, and Alec Humphreys was 2-for-5 with a double. Six Texan hitters combined for eight extra-base hits.

Trevor Renfro was the opening day starter and recorded the win on the hill for Tarleton. He worked five runs, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two. Callaway Kirkpatrick picked up the save, surrendering two runs on three hits and two walks while retiring two on strikes over the final four innings.
