(February 4, 2016) — Eight solid innings by sophomore pitcher Haley Freyman was enough for Tarleton State earn a third straight win to begin a season for the first time since 20011, but it wasn’t enough for a fourth straight victory.
Tarleton defeated East Central, 6-3, but lost to St. Edward’s, 1-0, on opening day of the NCAA Division II Softball Classic at St. Mary’s in San Antonio.
Freyman earned her second win of the season in the early game, thanks to 3.2 shutout innings of relief. She allowed just two hits and a walk as the TexAnns overcame a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth before ECU event it up with a run in the bottom of that inning.
But Tarleton scored a run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh to pull away despite being out-hit 9-7. Both teams committed two errors.
Shelby Hedrick started the game and left after 3.1 tough innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two. One of the runs was unearned.
Shortstop Delaney Wayland belted a two-run home run, in the key fourth inning, her second homer of the young season. Center fielder Melody Mayse was was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Freyman was at her best in the second game, allowing only a run on three hits in a 1-0 loss. The TexAnns left runners at third and second in the fifth inning and second and first in the seventh, while the only St. Edward’s run was unearned off an error.
