BROWNWOOD (February 15, 2016) — It was a game of runs, and Dublin’s was bigger, lasted longer and was ultimately more decisive.

The Lady Lions just kept scoring and Brady just kept missing shots or throwing the ball away in a second quarter comprised predominantly by a 23-0 Dublin run en route to a 64-52 victory at Brownwood High School.

The halftime margin was 36-15, more than a 12-2 Brady surge in the third quarter could overcome, and enough for the Lady Lions to win in the playoffs for the first time since 2007. It was their first post season appearance since 2008.

“It feels amazing. I think the girls finally understand what it means to get a win and be excited about it,” said first-year head coach Brittni Helton. “The girls have worked hard I’m excited for them.”

Carey Belew was the star of the run, scoring 13 of her 21 points during the second quarter, in which Dublin outscored Brady 25-4 following an 11-11 first period.

Brady’s answer came largely with the help of Dublin turnovers, but the Lady Lions rectified that in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t know what that was I guess we just wanted to make it interesting,” said Helton of the third quarter struggles. “I’m just glad we got it

Brady was battling between a 10 and 13 point deficit unitl Amber James hit a runner off a takeaway for a 15-point lead that swelled to 18 after a free throw by Weems with 5:38 remaining, and reached 59-39 by the midway point of the fourth.

Dublin advances to face Wall or Coahoma, most likely District 6-3A champ and state power Wall. Those teams were also playing Monday.

Behind Carey Belew in scoring for Dublin were her twin sister, Carley Belew, and London Jones with 13 points each. Whitney Weems was also in double figures with 11 and James scored five.
