Shaffer drives in seven runs in win, homers in loss

(February 18, 2016) — Stephenville overwhelmed Keene before dropping a tough one to China Spring on opening day of the Johnson County Invitational softball tournament in Cleburne Thursday.

The Honeybees amassed 12 runs in the top of the first and rolled on to a 28-0 thrashing in three innings. Stephenville had nine hits and Keene helped with seven errors.

Junior Sami Shaffer had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, walk, seven runs driven in and three more scored. Morgan Diciccio was 3-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and four runs scored. Jessica Howell and Jennie Winstead each drove in three runs and Emily Miller brought in two. Nadine Arredondo had a double.

Julia Flores pitched two innings and struck out four batters. Diciccio was perfect in an inning of relief.

Three erros cost Stephenville in a 3-1 loss to China Spring, spoiling the efforts of Flores, who pitched a complete game and didn’t allow an earned run. She struck out six and scattered five hits and two walks.

China Spring scored twice in the top of the sixth to make the difference. Shaffer finished her big day with a solo home run for Stephenville’s only score.
