STEPHENVILLE (February 21, 2016) – Haley Freyman hurled an absolute gem in Tarleton’s final game of the Rattler Invitational as the sophomore right-hander tossed her first career complete game shutout to lead the No. 10 TexAnns past Oklahoma Christian 3-0 Sunday.

This is the second game in Freyman’s young career that she has been involved in a shutout. Last season, she tossed 3.1 innings in relief of Katelyn Conlee for her first career combined shutout – a 10-0, five-inning win over Colorado Mines in Canyon at the West Texas A&M Invitational.

It is the first seven-inning, complete game shutout for a Tarleton pitcher since Brenna Hennan tossed a six-hit shutout of Cameron on April 4, 2014.

“After having infielders missing due to injury or illness over the last few weekends, we’ve struggled to put complete defensive games together as a team,” said head coach Julie Mata. “Haley pitched a great game and we put an error free game of defense behind her. I am very proud of her complete game shutout and the strong showing we had as a team today.”

Sunday afternoon, Freyman – with the help of three double plays and an error-free game from the defense behind her – kept the Eagles off the board in seven innings allowing four hits and three walks while striking out one to claim the 10th win of her sophomore season and the 33rd of her career.

The teams stayed scoreless over the first three innings before the TexAnns broke through the run column in the top of the fourth inning. The TexAnn defense ended the Oklahoma Christian third inning with the second of their three double plays of the day when Melody Mayse squeezed a fly ball in center and doubled off the runner at first base to erase a one-out single and set up the Tarleton offense. The first double play came in the first when Savannah Stech snagged a line drive at third and double up the game’s leadoff walk on first base to keep the Eagles in check.

Tarleton answered with a one-out double from Nyka Wood in the fourth. After Wood was lifted for courtesy runner Taylor Fitzgerald, Rebeka Allen drove her home with an RBI single into center field for a 1-0 Tarleton lead.

After Freyman sat the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the fourth, Tarleton added its second run when Avery Mullendore scored the second run of the game on an RBI fielder’s choice from Mayse.

Wood provided Tarleton with a little more insurance when she drove in her eighth RBI in the last three games with an RBI double to left field to bring home Lauren Powers for the final run of the game. In the ensuing half inning, Tarleton ended the game on its third double play when Delaney Wayland turned a line drive to shortstop into two outs by erasing a one-out single at first base to deliver Tarleton’s 12th win of the season.

Tarleton’s offense supplied three runs on seven hits, including two from Wood for her sixth multi-hit game. It also extended Wood’s hitting streak to 10, which is the longest by a TexAnn this season. Joining Wood in the hit parade was Mayse, Conlee, Allen, Mullendore, and Powers.

Freyman, Wood, and Mayse were each named to the All-Tournament team.

The TexAnns will head to Canyon next weekend to begin Lone Star Conference play against No. 22 West Texas A&M at Schaeffer Park. The first pitch of the series is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m.
