(STEPHENVILLE) — Huckabay ISD will have a bond proposal on the ballot for the May 7 local election.

Erath County Commissioners approved during their regular meeting Monday an election contract with HISD after school trustees agreed to put before the voters a bond proposal to construct a new building housing a cafeteria with kitchen and a gymnasium, as well as four classrooms where the current cafeteria is located.

The proposal is for $6.29 million, according to one member of a bond steering committee that did a needs assessment and more before presenting their findings to the board. The committee is comprised of individuals the school district says represents a “diverse cross section of the community including parents, business leaders, teachers, students, district administrators and community leaders.”

If approved, the bond would address aging facilities, provide safety and accessibility improvements and increase capacity to meet the needs of current students and future growth, the district posted on its Facebook page Monday following the meeting of county commissioners.

The district will also have a political action committee working to inform voters of the district’s needs.

Much more coming on this developing story.
