(February 28, 2016) — After five straight games scoring 11 or more runs, Stephenville couldn’t get its vaunted batting lineup on track in a 2-0 loss to Hillsboro that determined the champion of the Honeybee Invitational at Stephenville City Park Saturday.

The tournament brought in 24 teams and none proved as potent offensively as the Honeybees, who outscored opponents 71-3 over their first five games, a tear that ran their win streak to six before the loss in the final.

After outscoring three pool play foes 48-0 on Friday (recap here), Stephenville began Gold Bracket action with an 11-1 win over Comanche Saturday morning. The Honeybees thrummed Granbury, 12-1, in the semifinal before running into Hillsboro in the nightcap of the three day affair.

Julia Flores was dominant from the circle, perhaps most so in the loss. She fired five innings of no-hit softball with both Hillsboro runs being of the unearned variety thanks to three Honeybee errors that ultimately determined the game. Flores struck out seven batters and issued one walk.

Stephenville had six hits to none in the final, led by Nadine Arredondo, who was 2-for-3. Sami Shaffer had a double.

Arredondo, Shaffer and Kali Smith each had banner weekends at the plate, especially when all three launched home runs in the rout of Granbury. Arredondo also had a double in that one, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs. Shaffer was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, a run and a walk, while Smith was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and three runs. Flores worked all four innings, yielding just a run on three hits while striking out seven.

Stephenville equally controlled Comanche, with Flores putting on another seven strikeout display while surrendering a run on three hits and a walk. She worked 12.2 innings on the day, allowing just two earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out 21. She also drove in three runs and scored two against Comanche. Morgan Diciccio and Smith each had doubles and Jessica Howell unloaded a triple.
