(March 2, 2016) — Chase Rathke and DeAijha Hicks-Boyce were both selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas on March 11-16.
“I’m happy with the two that were selected,” said head coach Pat Ponder. “We would have liked to have some more and we just missed several others by one or two places and that’s the luck of the draw sometimes with the NCAA selections. We just needed to run faster, throw farther and jump higher. But I’m excited with the athletes we are taking to the championships.”
Rathke will compete in the mile in which he ran a 4:05.08 at the Houston Invitational, the fastest time in the Lone Star Conference this season and the sixth-fastest time in all of NCAA Division II. Rathke also set the indoor school record. The senior earned All-Conference and USTFCCCA All-Region honors after winning a pair of gold medals in the mile and distance medley relay at the Lone Star Conference championships. Rathke won a bronze medal at the indoor championships in the 800m in 2014.
Hicks-Boyce will run the 200m dash at the NCAA Championships after running the event in 24.33 at the Lone Star Conference championships. Hicks-Boyce has the second-fastest time in the LSC this season and ranks eighth in the NCAA. Like Rathke, Hicks-Boyce was also named to the All-Conference and USTFCCCA All-Region teams after winning the 200m and placing second in the 60m at the LSC Championships. It’s Hicks-Boyce’s first time to qualify for the indoor championships.
