No. 25 TexAnns split doubleheader against No. 9 TAMUI

LAREDO – A leadoff home run from Nyka Wood in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two sparked a comeback win for No. 25 Tarleton in a doubleheader split with Texas A&M International Tuesday.

Game 1: Texas A&M International 9, No. 25 Tarleton 8 (8)
Tarleton was forced to play catch up from a 3-0 first inning deficit and ultimately lost the game 9-8 to the Dustdevils after being outscored 4-3 in extra innings.

After the Dustdevils put up a three spot in the bottom of the first, Tarleton was forced to chip away into the deficit – which started with a RBI single from Avery Mullendore in the third inning. The 3-1 score would hold until the fifth inning when Tarleton took the lead with a sacrifice fly from Katelyn Conlee, an RBI double Mullendore, and an RBI single by Rebeka Allen that put the TexAnns up 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

International put up solo runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 5-4 advantage, but Tarleton would not go quietly as Mullendore drove in her third RBI of the game with a single to left to bring home Taylor Fitzgerald for the tying run.

Tarleton got an RBI single from Amanda Conner and back-to-back RBI doubles from Savannah Stechand Wood in the top of the eighth to take an 8-5 advantage. International responded with four in its half of the inning to take the walk-off win on a two-RBI single to left center.

Wood and Mullendore each boasted three-hit performances for the game. Wood went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Mullendore was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Stech, Allen, and Conner each had two base hits while Lauren Powers and Shelby Hedrick had one each in Tarleton’s 14-hit attack.

Game 2: No. 25 Tarleton 4, Texas A&M International 3
Looking to end a three-game skid and trailing by one in the seventh inning, Nyka Wood stepped up and went deep to lead off the final inning to keep Tarleton alive before Powers worked a bases loaded walk to put Tarleton on top for good in the TexAnns; 4-3 win over International Tuesday.

The teams traded runs in the first inning when Hedrick put Tarleton on the board with an RBI groundout in the top of the first and International answered with a solo homer in the bottom.

After International went on top with one in the second, the teams traded solo spots in the fifth when Hedrick drove in her second run of the game on an RBI single to left. International scored its run on an RBI double to take a 3-2 lead.

That lead carried into the seventh before Wood struck for the leadoff home run to tie it at 3-3.

After a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt, and an intentional walk to Allen loaded the bases, Powers stepped up with two outs and drew an RBI walk to bring home Hedrick for the go-ahead run. Haley Freyman came on in relief of Hedrick in the bottom of the seventh and sat down the side in order to secure the win.

Tarleton got six hits, including two each from Wood and Hedrick, as well as one eah from Katelyn Conlee and Powers.

Alyssa Ringhausen threw 2.2 innings of two-run (one earned) work, allowing four hits and a walk. Hedrick came on in relief and pitched 2.1 innings while Freyman tossed the final two innings of work en route to the win.

Tarleton will return home Saturday for a doubleheader against St. Edward’s at 1 p.m. at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
