STEPHENVILLE (April 13, 2016) — Hailey Martin knew exactly what it would take to win the triple jump in the 6-4A district track and field meet. So she woke up Wednesday morning, grabbed a marker and wrote “36” on her hand.

“I told her she should go grab a marker from coach (Jeremiah) Butchee real quick and mark it out and write 37,” joked her father Phil Martin after Hailey soared to a personal best 36 feet, 6-1/2 inches to win the district title in the event.

It was part of a stellar district meet for Martin at Lem Brock Field Monday and Wednesday. The season scoring leader for the Honeybees, the sophomore didn’t disappoint, also winning the girls long jump, placing second in the 100 meter hurdles and helping the 4×100 and 4×200 relays advance to area as well.

Martin qualified for area in five events for the girls, while Josh Nowell advanced in four events for the Stephenville boys.

Nowell won district championships in the high jump and long jump on Monday and added a third place finish in the triple jump Wednesday.

“High jump and long jump are two things I’ve been working on since seventh grade,” said Nowell immediately following the meet. “It feels good to get a district title and move on to area and hopefully get myself up there in the state rankings.”

The Midwestern State football signee was suffering from back pain while competing the triple jump and discus Wednesday.

“I was real frustrated with my overall distance (in the triple jump) because I want to win every meet,” Nowell said. “But the goal is to come back next week and get my (personal record) at area.”

In his lone running event, Nowell helped the Yellow Jackets to second in the 4×400 meter relay, which featured one of the most entertaining finishes of the meet. Nowell, Aaron Burrows, Dawson Grey and Pedro Manrriquez were caught by Brownwood with about 40 meters remaining and finished second by a couple strides.

“That was a great race. I love that event because we have a great group of guys,” Nowell said. “Even though we finished second, we’re glad to be moving on and give ourselves a shot to get to the big show.”

Martin and freshman Bailey McBee were involved in arguably the most exciting finish in the 100 meter hurdles. They came in stride-for-stride in lanes three and five, with the district champ from Wylie just a step ahead in lane four. McBee finished third.

The other district championship for Stephenville came from girls high jumper Jordan Carter, the only competitor to clear five feet, two inches.

“It felt good, that was the point where i knew I needed to clear it to win,” said Carter of her winning jump. “I had that competitive drive going.”

The sophomore is coached in the high jump, by her father, Joe Carter.

“It’s awesome, I love it so much,” said Jordan of working with Coach Dad. “I feel like he’s tough on me but it helps me in the end. I just work harder when he gets on me and it brings us closer together.”

Brownwood won the girls meet with Wylie second and Stephenville third. Abilene Wylie won the boys title with Brownwood second and Stephenville third.
