Carter places fourth in high jump, Martin sixth in triple jump

LUBBOCK (April 30, 2016) — Jordan Carter missed all three attempts at 5 feet, 2 inches and was left on the outside looking in after the girls high jump Saturday morning.

Vernon’s Emily Castleberry, who Carter defeated for the area title, went on to clear 5-3 to earn the Region I-4A championship and spot at state. Carter finished fourth by clearing 5-0 with no misses. Jumpers from Fort Stockton and Godley claimed second and third.

Hailey Martin placed sixth in the first of three events for her on the final day of the regional meet at Lowrey Field. She improved to 35-2-3/4 on her first attempt in the finals, but scratched on her second attempt and did not improve on her third.

Martin needed a clutch final preliminary jump just to reach the finals. The five-event regional qualifier scratched on her opening two attempts, but took the safe approach and marked a 34-7-1/4 on her final preliminary try, taking second in the first flight and eventually being seeded seventh entering the finals.

Nadine Arredondo didn’t make the finals in girls shot put and both Josh Nowell and Krece Nowak missed the finals in boys long jump.

Martin will compete in the 100 meter hurdles at 3:05 p.m., today and will be joined by Kristen Pettit, Bailey McBee and Bayleigh Chaviers in the 4×200 relay at 3:35 p.m. Both were sixth fastest in the prelims on Friday.
