STEPHENVILLE (May 19, 2016) — Tarleton State is saying goodbye to longtime softball head coach Julie Mata.
But they are keeping the job within the ‘family.’
Assistant coach Mark Cumpian is being promoted to head coach, athletic director Lonn Reisman confirmed Thursday afternoon. A press conference formally announcing the promotion will be held at Wisdom Gym at 10 a.m. Friday, one week after Mata resigned following 20 seasons leading the program she started.
Cumpian was pitching coach at Tarleton from 2010-11 through 2013-14, and coached hitters and outfielders the last two years. He has been the top assistant and recruiter under Mata since arriving in Stephenville. He helped Tarleton to its first South Central Region I Tournament title and first South Central Super Regional appearance last spring.
Cumpian played baseball as a relief pitcher at Howard Payne in Brownwood. When his eligibility was complete, he served as a student assistant with the softball team for one season before graduating in 2010.
