STEPHENVILLE (May 26, 2016) – Ready, set, read!!
The Stephenville Public Library (SPL) is geared up for a summer full of reading adventures with special events and programs.
Director Mary Meredith said the fun kicks off Thursday, June 2 when reading logs will be available and a special program welcomes Stephenville fire and police departments, as well as Sparky the Fire Dog to the library. The event begins at 2 p.m. and is open to the general public without reservation.
The reading log program encourages readers, birth to 18 years old, to read as many books as possible during the summer months. Meredith said parents or caregivers reading to younger children can fill in the appropriate information on the reading log each time a book is read to the infant, toddler or preschooler and earn rewards.
“Summer is the best time for children to read books,” Meredith said. “They can choose what they want to read, and they hold on to (the stories and information) much longer when it’s something they want to (rather than have to) read.”
Participants record each book they read on their reading log, which can be turned in at the end of the summer for a certificate and goody bag.
Adding to the fun, Summer Reading Program events are scheduled every Thursday through July 28 with several requiring reservations, including Old Timer Racoon at 2 p.m. June 9; a visit to the Tarleton State University Planetarium at 2 p.m. June 23; Magic and Juggling at 6 p.m. June 23; a visit with Ronald McDonald at 2 pm. June 30; guests from Tarleton’s horticulture department at 2 p.m. July 7; a movie at Cinema 6 at 9 a.m. July 14; a visit with the Dick Smith Library Players at 2 p.m. July 21; and a Harry Potter birthday party with the Tarleton Quiddich team at 6:30 p.m. July 28.

A dino dig with Kathy Lenz of Dinosaur Valley State Park will be held at 2 p.m. June 16 and doesn’t require reservations.
Meredith said other upcoming events include movie nights, crafts and art days throughout the summer, which will be announced on the SPL Facebook page.
“We will have a lot going on throughout the summer,” she said.
Meanwhile, the library hosts story time at 10:30 a.m. every Friday, which is open to all children but geared toward those who are three years old and older. Toddler time for younger children will also be held – details will be posted at a later date.
Pokemon Club meets at 4:30 p.m. every other Wednesday beginning June 8, and the Teen Anime Club meets at 6 p.m. every other Tuesday, beginning June 14.
For readers off all ages who prefer to get their literary fix while on the go or from the comfort of their own home, SPL now offers access to eBooks.
“The library now has Overdrive and our patrons can access free eBooks,” Meredith said. “Library patrons log in with their library card number and get access to thousands of eBooks using their Kindle, iPad, smartphone and other devices. It is a great service we hope the public both utilizes and enjoys.”
Library cards are free for Stephenville residents, and $25 per year for families living outside the city and covers the entire family. Fee exemptions are available for teachers, students, home schoolers and individuals with financial need.
“All one has to do to get a library card is bring in a ID and (a piece of mail or copy of a residential rental agreement for) proof of address,” Meredith said.
Stephenville Public Library is located at 174 N. Columbia Street, off of Washington Street and a couple of blocks from City Hall. The library is open 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 12 p.m. (noon -8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed every Sunday and Monday.
