HICO (June 1, 2016) – In the mists of high-water rescues and evacuations, the Hico Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 400 block of Cherry Street Tuesday night.

According to Brandon Keller with the Hico VFD, everyone living in the house at the time was able to get out safely and upon arrival, the units from the fire department were able to set straight to work putting out the flames.

“The house was almost completely engulfed when the department arrived,” Keller said. “There was major damage by fire as well as smoke and water damage to the home. I would say it was a completely loss.”

Keller said while the investigation was still ongoing, he believed the cause of the fire was initially electrical. Texas and New Mexico Power was called to the scene and power to the house was turned off.

Just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Hico VFD was dispatched to the location a second time to reports of  a rekindle at the house. One unit arrived on scene and had the hot spots out before 3 p.m.
