ERATH COUNTY (June 21, 2016) – A pregnant mother is headed to prison for dealing drugs in Stephenville.
Anna Romero, 30, was convicted of manufacture or delivery of 4-200 grams of meth Tuesday, June 21, in the 266th Judicial District Court, according to Assistant District Attorney Jett Smith.
The first-degree felony offense carries a potential sentence of 5-99 years in prison.
Romero is the mother of a nine-year-old child who was not in her custody when the offense occurred in December 2014, and is also currently five months pregnant, according to Smith.
“So this – methamphetamine – has really taken a toll on her family,” he said, adding that Romero most recently reported a Fort Worth address but lived in a Stephenville apartment complex when the offense occurred.
During testimony, Romero admitted to using meth and smoking and selling marijuana.
While she did not have a felony record prior to Tuesday’s conviction, Smith said Romero did have prior misdemeanor convictions for delivery of marijuana and assault causing bodily injury.
He also said the guilty verdict and prison term – assessed by an Erath County jury – came with a message.
“The jury sent a loud message to the community,” Smith said. “Even though a defendant does not have a felony criminal history, the people of Erath County don’t take dealing meth lightly.”
At the time of her arrest, Romero reportedly had almost 5 grams of meth, and Stephenville Police Detective Russell Ford told the jury it was enough of the highly potent and addictive drug to deliver a high to up to 50 inexperienced drug users.
And Smith agreed meth is a drug known to hook first-time users into becoming habitual abusers and even drug addicts.
In addition to the 10-year prison stint, Romero was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.
Romero was represented by court-appointed defense attorney Andrew Ottaway of Granbury.
