(July 16, 2016) — An elite group of Erath County cowboys will compete for $100,000 on Showdown Sunday at the Calgary Stampede, the world’s richest tournament rodeo.
Pool B concluded with its fourth performance on Friday, as Richie Champion advanced in bareback riding and Marty Yates in tie-down roping. Reigning PRCA world champ Jacobs Crawley didn’t advance from Pool B, but did take third with a 82.5 point ride on Wild Card Saturday.
Champion and Yates secured their finals spots with strong performances in the first three rounds of Pool B.
Champion, a former Tarleton State star and Dublin resident who was the first million-dollar cowboy at the RFD-TV The American, was second with 84 points in the first round, split second and third with another 84 in the second-go, and split second and third again with 83 points in round three. He pocketed $12,500 during the flight, placing second behind Canada’s Orin Larsen with 19,000.
Yates was fourth in 7.7, second in 7.2 and fifth in 8.8 over the first three rounds, taking fourth in the pool with $8,500. Eight time world champ Fred Whitfield won Pool B with $12,500.
Already bound for Showdown Sunday following the conclusion of four Pool A performances July 8-11 were four-time world bareback champ Bobby Mote, saddle bronc rider Cort Scheer.
Stephenville tie-down roper Sterling Smith tied for fourth in his flight and posted no time on Wildcard Saturday, when a star-studded field was topped by Hunter Herrin in 7.7 seconds. Former Tarleton star Reese Riemer was sixth in 9.9 while Ryle Smith, another past Tarleton cowboy, joined Smith with a no time.
