LINGLEVILLE (August 1, 2016) — There is optimism in Lingleville as the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals begin preparations for their 2016 football and volleyball seasons.

Second-year football coach Troy Sparks, a 1991 Dublin graduate and a Tarleton alumnus, says the Cardinals have strengthened their schedule with non-district contests against Borden County, Blum and Zephyr to test their Tight J-Bird offense and plans of aggressive and relentless defense before league competition begins.

Sparks looks to junior quarterback Tom VanKranenburg and others to lead the Cardinals to the playoffs.

“We are looking for a great year. We’ve been in the weight room all year and been in 7-on-7 against some big teams,” said Sparks. “I think we’re ready to attack this season and take on the juggernauts we have to take on.”

The Lady Cardinals have a new coach directing their efforts on the volleyball court, as Davin Shulz takes overhand puts his program building philosophy to work.

“As far as a successful season to me, if I can gauge it, I would say that it’s just competing as hard as we can every game, not fearing anybody and giving our best effort in every single play, every single ball,” said Shulz. “Do the best we can every single time the ball is hit across the net, that is a successful season and you can build off that.”

Shulz, a product of Caldwell and 2009 graduate of Sam Houston State University, says the Lady Cards have a pretty tough schedule ahead of them, including some larger schools. Lingleville will be in a 4-2 defense and, while they have some height, the Lady Cards are “very young.” They have only a couple seniors, including Laura Ramos, and will also look to sophomore Dorothy Cruz to help keep the team fired up.
