STEPHENVILLE (August 16, 2016) – Stephenville High School freshman, Monica Flores, will be celebrating her Quinceanera at the City Limits on Saturday, October 1.

Planning for a Quinceanera often begins a year in advance and requires resources and support from several family members and friends.  The Quinceanera is one of the most important and enduring celebrations in the Mexican culture.  The importance of the celebration of fifteen years for a family can not be underestimated.  When a Hispanic girl turns 15 years of age, it represents the symbolic step of becoming a woman.  The celebration of the fifteen year old girl originates with the Aztecs and has evolved into a large family celebration at the same level as a wedding. Most Hispanics believe that it is a very important time in the life of a young girl who is becoming a woman.

Young Hispanic girls are often taught by the elder women in their community, prior to their 15th birthdays, how to cook and they are taught about childbearing in preparation for their lives as married women.  It is traditional for the Quinceanera to choose special friends to participate in what is called the Court of Honor.  Usually, these young people are her closest friends, brothers, sisters, cousins, or other special people in her life with whom she wants to share the spotlight. The Quinceanera’s Court of Honor can be comprised of all young girls (called Damas) , all young men (called Chambelanes) or a combination of both boys and girls.  The Chambelan de Honor is the special young man that is chosen by the 15 year old girl.

Jesus Medrano is serving as the Chambelan de Honor.  Monica and her Court of Honor have been practicing their dancing in preparation for the big event in the city park for quite some time now.  Monica’s parents, Norma Rodriguez and Monico Flores, are very proud and excited for their young daughter.  Monica also has a younger sister named Jennifer and a younger brother named Albert.
