Bees topple Abilene Cooper in five sets

(August 17, 2016) — Stephenville continued its impressive start to the 2016 volleyball season with a second straight road win over a 5A opponent Tuesday evening, this time a five-set marathon victory at Abilene Cooper.

The Honeybees (2-0) fell to Cooper twice last season, but even with a largely new varsity roster, outlasted the Lady Cougars 25-19, 19-25, 25-12, 23-25, 15-12. Stephenville looks to continue its hot start during tournament play in Granbury Thursday through Saturday. Their first home match will not come until Sept. 6.

Sophomore Jayci Morton racked up 16 kills with a strong .380 hitting percentage, while Nicona Stilwell had 14 kills, five digs and four blocks to lead Stephenville offensively. Senior setter Taylor Garber amassed 34 assists quarterbacking the effort.

Hailey Martin had 21 digs, Chloe Goodman 15, Hannah Huckabaee, Garber eight and Kylee Ponder seven to anchor the defense. Goodman also had eight kills and five blocks in a solid all-around effort.

Emily Brandon had three kills and four blocks, Garber also tallied four kills and Ashton Garner added three.

Stephenville posted a .180 attack percentage as a team. The Bees scored 107 points with 28 total errors.
