Elbert Lindley, 98, of Stephenville, died Friday, August 26, 2016 in Stephenville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Graham Street Church of Christ with Don Parker officiating. Military graveside will follow at West End Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday at Stephenville Funeral Home.
Elbert was born of January 17, 1918 in Sweetwater, Texas, one of eleven children, born to the late Luther Martin and Katie Catherine Sanders Lindley. He married Jerry Weatherly Myers on September 3, 1995 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Elbert served his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After 62 years, after his honorable discharge from the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1945, Elbert finally received his Purple Heart, on July 13, 2007. Staff Sgt. Elbert Lindley was wounded in action by Japanese hostile gunfire on May 11, 1945, near Guam. He was the last survivor of the 10 man crew who flew on the B-24 aircraft, ‘Cowbird’. Just a few days before each atomic bomb was dropped upon the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the ten man crew aboard the Cowbird, was sent to drop leaflets, on each city, to warn the Japanese citizens to leave their cities before the bombs would destroy them. He was very proud of his military career, and the bonds he developed with his fellow gunners during the Japanese invasion. After his military career, Elbert became an Aeronautical Engineer with Chance Vought Corp. Elbert was a member of the Graham Street Church of Christ, and member of the VFW. He and his wife Jerry loved to travel.
Elbert is survived by his wife, Jerry; daughters, Valerie and husband Ron Fields of Houston, Lydia Lindley of Eastland, Mary Ann and husband Kevin Ray of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Jane McClellan of Nashville, Melinda Myers of Stephenville, and Joan and husband Ellsworth Anderson of Rockwall; son, Scott Myers of Hico; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Elbert was also preceded in death by two wives, three sisters and seven brothers.
