Anderson returns to Tarleton as ‘Voice of the Texans’

STEPHENVILLE (August 30, 2016) – A former Tarleton Texan baseball standout is coming home as Byron Anderson has been named the new Voice of the Texans.

“We are excited to bring Byron on board as the new Voice of the Texans,” said Athletic Director Lonn Reisman. “He brings a lot of knowledge and experience in radio and he is passionate about Tarleton State University. I look forward to working with Byron and I know our fans will enjoy his broadcasts on the Tarleton Sports Network.”

Anderson will be the play-by-play announcer for football and men’s basketball while serving as color commentary for women’s basketball.

A former Tarleton baseball player and 2002 graduate, Anderson brings an extensive background to the Texan broadcasts. From 2002-07, Anderson worked for KSTV in Stephenville as the play-by-play voice for Yellow Jacket basketball and baseball as well as the sideline reporter for football games. From 2006-10, Anderson worked for ESPN Radio in Dallas as a reporter covering the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars. During 2011-12, Anderson covered all Rangers home playoff and World Series games for Sirius XM Radio and also was a weekend sports talk host for 1310 The Ticket. For the last five years, Anderson was a math teacher and coach at Fossil Hill middle school in Fort Worth.

A native of Keller, Anderson came to Tarleton in 2001 after transferring from Richland Community College. At Richland, he was an all-conference and all-region player and led his team to the national championship game in each of his two seasons.

He came to Tarleton and played his final two seasons for Hall of Fame head coach, Jack Allen, in Allen’s last seasons with the Texans. Anderson was a team captain in 2002 and earned all-conference and all-region honors as a senior. He hit 19 home runs in his Tarleton career.

One of the biggest home runs of Anderson’s career came last February when the former Texan standout earn him national acclaim when he hit a home run at Globe Life Park in Arlington to win the ‘Texas Rangers Swing For Your Seats’ contest for 2016 season tickets. That led to interviews with ESPN’s Sportscenter, Fox 4 News, NBC 5, CBS 11, and Fox Sports Southwest.

Anderson married former Tarleton volleyball player, Mary Irvine, who played for the TexAnns in 2005-06. The couple has a son, Bronson, and a daughter, Brylee.

In his first act as the lead voice of Tarleton Athletics, Anderson has filled the broadcast booth for the upcoming football with a local color commentator – Brad Keith.

Keith is a familiar face around Tarleton Athletics, having covered Texan games since 2002. Keith, part owner of Flash Rock Media, began his broadcasting career in 2002 as the color commentator for Tarleton football and men’s basketball games and was the play-by-play voice for women’s basketball until 2006. Keith was the sports editor of the Empire-Tribune from 2007-14 until he helped create Flash Rock Media, where he currently serves as the sports editor. In 2013, Keith was received the President’s All-Purple award for dedication to Tarleton Athletics. Keith won the Lone Star Conference Sportswriter of the year award in 2013-14.

Keith will join the Tarleton Sports Network team for football only.

The new TSN broadcast team will be in the booth for Tarleton football’s season opener at McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. Broadcasts of every Tarleton Football game can be heard on the flagship station of the Tarleton Sports Network, KTRL 90.5 FM in Stephenville, as well as worldwide at TarletonSports.com/ListenLive.
