(September 12, 2016) — One event last week turned into a microcosm of the season-long back-and-forth between world team roping leaders Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira and the No. 2 team of Luke Brown and Jake Long.

Driggers, a Stephenville header, and Nogueira, his heeling partner, won their 13th championship of the season at the Washington State Fair Pro Rodeo Friday through Sunday. Brown and Long were third. Driggers is first and Brown, of Stephenville, second in the world standings for headers, while Nogueira is first and Long, of Morgan Mill, third in heeling.

Driggers and Nogueira roped three head in 21.3 seconds in Puyallup, Washington, while Brown and Long roped two in 9.5. Driggers and Nogueira ale kwon the first round, while Brown and Long won the finals. When the dust cleared, Driggers took home more than $8,400 from the event, while Brown and Long each won more than $4,200.

Driggers leads Brown by $9,400, an amount dwarfed by one round of winnings at the National Finals Rodeo, where they will be among those contending for world titles. Paul Eaves of Huckabay is second in the world in heeling, between Nogueira and Long. The difference between Eaves and Long is less than $1,600.

Reigning world champ Jacobs Crawley, just two weeks removed his third Wrangler Champions Challenge title, has pushed his saddle bronc riding lead to more than $42,000.

Twelve cowboys from in and around Stephenville and Erath County would advance to the NFR if the regular season ended today. Two others, Billy Brown in heading and Logan Medlin in heeling, are on the edge, sitting 16th and 17th, respectively, in their events.

The regular season is winding down and concludes on Sunday, September 25. The Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville is one of the final weekend’s big events. Again a nominee for top mid-size rodeo, the event at Lone Star Arena has public performances September 23, 24 and 25, all at Lone Star Arena.
