The Ranger College Speech and Debate team came away with impressive accolades from the Georgia B. Bowman Debate tournament at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO over the weekend. The team earned the Top Community College Sweepstakes Award at the tournament.

One of the most competitive national level debate tournaments in the country, the tournament featured squads from some of the nation’s largest universities, including the University of Oregon, University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas and several others.

Ranger College edged out several other community colleges from around the U.S. for top honors in its division. In addition to placing first, Ranger College also vaulted to the top of the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence rankings for community colleges. Ranger College heads into the upcoming week ranked No. 1 in the national rankings.

“We were able to compete with the best in the nation and come out on top,” said RC Speech and Debate head coach John Mikolajcik. “This tournament is where students who have spent hours over the summer and fall semester preparing, arrive to start the year. Ranger College was in attendance this year and our hours of preparation have paid off.”

Mikolajcik said he was pleased with his teams’ efforts, especially considering the college only took a small portion of its team to the event.

“We achieved all of this by only sending two teams to the tournament. Ranger was represented by sophomores Kristen Conard, Conner Motley, Shane Brewer and freshman Brandon Jones.

Ranger College’s next competition will be at Texas Christian University on Oct. 14.
