STEPHENVILLE (September 23, 2016) — An explosive first half of offense followed by a second-half shut out by its defense lifted Stephenville to its first win of the season, 55-28, over Graham on homecoming night at Memorial Stadium Friday.

Sophomore running back Krece Nowak rushed for four scores and Easton Jones had a hand in four – three passing and one rushing – as the Yellow Jackets cruised to their first win since the bi-district round of the Region I-4A Division II playoffs last season.

Jones hit Kyle Lindsey for touchdown strikes of 61 and 40 yards, the latter a spectacular catch by Lindsey, just a sophomore, between two defenders in the end zone. That made it 42-28 at halftime as Stephenville scored the final 34 points after trailing 28-21.

Jones tied it with a 31-yard touchdown run and Stephenville took the lead for good on the second TD by Nowak, who scored twice in each half. It was 42-28 Stephenville at halftime. Jones’ other TD pass of the first half was a 31-yard strike to Cameron Frazier.

After senior volleyball standout and cheer captain Nicona Stilwell was crowned homecoming queen, the Yellow Jacket defense answered the bell in the second half, beginning with an interception by junior safety Cole Pettit that set the stage for a shutout the rest of the way.

Stephenville visits tough Lubbock Monterrey next week to close out its pre-district schedule.
