Tarleton men’s rodeo team holds commanding lead in Southwest Region

STEPHENVILLE (October 12, 2016) —Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams continue to outpace the competition this fall in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s (NIRA) Southwest Region.

As of Oct. 5, the men’s rodeo team holds a comfortable lead atop the regional rankings while the Tarleton women are ranked second after three Southwest Region collegiate rodeos. The cowboys have collected 1,342 points—597 more than second-place Texas Tech with 745—heading into their fourth rodeo this fall, set for Oct. 13-15, at Clarendon (Texas) College. Tarleton’s cowgirls have earned 580 team points to narrowly trail regional leader Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) by 62.5.

Most recently, Tarleton’s rodeo teams competed at Vernon (Texas) College, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, and qualified 19 athletes into the short round. The men’s team walked away with their second team championship of the fall season after collecting 460 points to extend their lead in the Southwest Region. The women finished third with 165 points.

Kody Lamb won the bareback riding average for the second week in a row, while Jacob Springer finished third and Tyler Berghuis came in fifth. Tarleton’s Kyle Johnson also qualified for the short-go but finished 10th in the standings.

In tie-down roping, Reid Zaplac finished second in the average, while Lane Livingston earned 10th.

Michael Tash won the first round of steer wrestling competition and third overall, and Donald Payne finished ninth in the average.

Ivan Holliday and team roping partner Cord Carpenter won second in the weekend average, with Abby Medlin and ENMU partner Bryce Howe coming in at ninth.

In goat tying, McKenna Wagner and Baili Collins tied for first in the first round of competition to qualify for the short round, only to tie again for first in the short-go and first in the average. Allison Danley finished 10th overall in the event.

Abby Medlin also qualified for the short-go in the breakaway roping to finish sixth overall. Rylee Dick qualified in the barrel racing to finish eighth overall.
